If the car does not have the 16pin port in the car then you'll find that pin 15 on the 20 pin port will be populated and the adapter cable will not work properly no matter what you do. If you have a car which also has the 16pin OBDII port inside the car then generally your advice is good and you can use a 16pin to 20 pin adapter cable. (Info added by zigzag_sky regarding OBD II to OBD I converters: Strictly speaking it is not OBD I and there are two variants. Also, this cable will work with OBD I sockets in E36's via an OBD II to OBD I converter (that can easily be had on eBay). Currently, the easiest, cheapest and most versatile is a properly modified usb to OBD II cable to work with the correct lines that run into the OBD socket.
